Chitor
[Chittaurgarh]: Fortress with the most tragic history
in Rajasthan.
Three times in as many centuries, the Rajput clans gathered here to
fight off the Muslim invaders, and lost. The women waiting in the
fortress learning that their men were dead, committed suttee
--leaping into a firepit in a chamber deep within the fort. The mile
long fortification is covered with palaces, temples, towe etc. Kipling,
in his Jungle Book, called it the ‘cold lairs’ where the
monkeys lived. He said that the Gomukh tank above the western wall
was a very spooky place. Legend tells of secret passages. Does it
exist?
